The Challenge

Inventors working on proprietary projects in shared workspaces need robust security and automated safety systems that protect both people and intellectual property. How do you create a smart environment that responds appropriately to different threat scenarios?

What I Built

I designed and prototyped an intelligent security and safety system for a secure co-working space. The system integrated physical security controls with automated emergency response protocols.

Security Features:

  • PIN-based access control with lockdown mode

  • Secure entry system that restricts building access during off-hours

  • Real-time status display via LCD screen showing entry authorization and building mode

Automated Emergency Response: The system monitored for multiple threat types and executed appropriate safety protocols:

  • Fire Alert: Power shutdown to all workstations → sprinkler system activation

  • Flood Alert: Immediate power shutdown to protect equipment and prevent electrical hazards

  • Smoke Detection: Automated ventilation fan activation to clear the space

  • Intruder Alert: Audible alarm system activation

Technical Implementation

Built using physical computing components (microcontroller, sensors, actuators) to create a functional prototype demonstrating real-world safety automation. The system processed sensor inputs, managed multiple output devices, and maintained state awareness across different security modes.

Outcome

Successfully demonstrated integrated security and safety automation for the HCDE 539 final project. Complete documentation and source code available upon request.
